When pumpkins, halloween costumes, and cider donuts are the name of the game for farm stands and local nurseries around here, how does one get customers to come to “their” store? An innovative idea by the owner of Vinney’s Home and Garden Showplace in East Hartford did the trick. Following directions, and times of the release that were published in our local newspaper, I arrived about 15 minutes before 12:00. One of the stores employees was already debriefing the crowd of about 100 people in the crowded greenhouse on what was going to happen. Right at noon, a square box was opened and 50 Monarch and Painted Lady butterflies were released. Slowly at first, they climbed out of the box. As they got used to the greenhouse atmosphere they started flying all around to the enthusiastic squeals of children and adults alike. Great idea Vinny’s!
