I was on my way to work this morning noticing the sun as it made its way above the hazy horizon. The big red ball was playing hide and seek with the low hanging clouds as I drove by the demolition site of the old Capitol West building in Hartford. Going into a parking lot adjacent to the demo site I noticed that if I waited a "few more minutes" I would get a different and great … [Read more...]

Aaaaaaaayyyyyyy, look who I found at work today
I did a double take this morning when I was walking down the hallway at work when this gentleman asked me where the bathrooms were. Yup, Henry Winkler himself was in our studio today talking about stroke awareness. He came back down the hall and because he had some time before he went on camera, I spoke to him for a few minutes and, shamefully asked to get a picture with … [Read more...]
Venus Transit, getting close
It's been a mere 8 years since the last Venus Transit around here, and it will be over one hundred years till we see another if you miss the next one on June 5th-6th, in the year 2117. I went to Pt. Judith , R.I. back in June 5, 2004 to shoot the last one, as the sun rose over the Atlantic Ocean. A sight that I will never forget. It was very foggy out as scores of people … [Read more...]
Solar powered STOP sign
I was driving through Meriden today when I came to the corner of Pratt Street and Center Street. I did a double take to see this STOP sign flashing at me with 8 LED lights, and a solar panel attached to the top of the sign to power it. Pretty neat! It got my attention from much further away then a regular STOP sign, and this was during the daytime. This is the first time I … [Read more...]
The Sun Funnel, a low tech, high return piece of equipment
After seeing a Facebook posting by fellow astronomer George Huftalen from Rhode Island a few weeks ago I just shook my head. This is exactly what I was looking for for my Solar public outreach get togethers. I had the best intensions to build "The Sun Gun" after seeing it on the internet, but it's size was a bit big for me. Then I noticed George's Sun Funnel. That's what … [Read more...]
Battleship Cove, Fall River, Massachusetts
One of the places I have always wanted to go, but never had a chance for one reason or another. I finally got a chance, and after I got there I was saying "boy I should have done this sooner." This is Battleship Cove. Located on the waterfront in historic Fall River, Massachusetts, Battleship Cove is a nonprofit maritime museum and war memorial that is home to the … [Read more...]
Big plane, low flight
A low flying Pratt & Whitney jumbo jet did a couple of fly overs of East Hartford and Middletown late this afternoon. The jet had the Pratt and Whitney Eagle displayed on the tail, and looked a little unusual, with an additional stub wing test engine on the right side of the plane. The plane is a test aircraft for Pratt’s Pure Power engine. The flyovers are intended to … [Read more...]
Manchester’s High Wire Act
I was able to recently capture a rare occurance in the skies over Manchester, Connecticut. Connecticut Light and Power was using a helicopter to string high voltage lines across I-84 and I-291. The 2.7 mile upgrade in transmission lines is between Burnham and West Center Streets, was at a cost of 28.8 million dollars. It was trilling to watch the ballet like moves that … [Read more...]
