As Gov. Jodi Rell put the Connecticut National Guard on alert, many of the rivers in the southeastern part of the state are reaching historic flood levels today, March 30th. The rivers will continue to rise for at least another day according to the National Weather Service. Roads and bridges have already been destroyed, and a parking lot of an apartment complex in Middletown … [Read more...]

Connecticut’s Rock Creatures coming back to life
Spring is here. The snow is gone (for now), the early flowers are starting to bloom, and the leaves, dirt, and debris are uncovering the Rock Creatures around Connecticut for another year. These creatures, as scarce as they might be, are out in full view, soaking up the sunlight and becoming more visable by the day. Take this creature near my house in Marlborough known as … [Read more...]
Another International Space Station fly over
The ISS had another orbit over Connecticut last night (3-19-10). This time passing from Northwest to Southeast just before 8:00pm. The weather did not cooperate like it did the last time. This time we had some high level clouds in the area which hampered the clarity of the image. It was still great to watch it fly over … [Read more...]
Cresent moon makes a nice apperance
It was 58 degrees outside on March 17th. Perfectly clear skies. No reason not to go out and enjoy a nice evening of some simple but elegant astronomy. A 4% Waxing Cresent Moon was setting in the west just after sunset. A perfect time for some moon pictures! Check out what I got in my observing location here in Marlborough, Ct. Enjoy! … [Read more...]
Weekend storm Marlborough, Ct. and graves in Connecticut
The weekend rain and wind storm raised havoc with people above and below ground in the southwestern part of Connecticut. While checking out the storm damage and seeing the "usual" powerlines down, trees on houses, and the maze of detours, I ran across a site I have never seen in my 35 years of covering storms. I was driving down Newfield Avenue in Stamford when I saw … [Read more...]
Recent rainfall floods many stream and rivers
While the rain this weekend kept coming down, the levels of the state's streams and rivers kept creeping up. With weather forcasters predicting over 6 inches of rain fall in some areas this weekend, smaller trout streams were turned into raging torrents of water. Here is an example of some of the usual calm and small Hammanassett River that I captured off of Green Hill … [Read more...]
New Haven’s new landmark
Recently a new landmark was added and will be associated with the City of New Haven, Connecticut's skyline. Visable from miles away it's a 121 foot tall monopole with a huge wind turbine on the top. Manufactured by Northern Power Systems, of Barre, Vermont the wind turbine is providing 1/3 the annual power usage for the Phoenix Press, a printing company on the Quinnipiac … [Read more...]
Venus shines its beauty against East Hampton, Ct. landmarks
Tonight was a rare clear and comfortable March evening when I decided to go out and capture the planet Venus, the Roman Goddess of love and beauty setting in the western sky. I chose as a foreground, the Riverview Cemetery in East Hampton, Connecticut. Perched on a hill overlooking Lake Pocotopaug. Venus, the second brightest object in the night sky (the moon is the first) was … [Read more...]
Picture of the International Space Station as it passes over Connecticut
Several weeks ago I successfully shot video of the International Space Station as it passed to the southwest of Connecticut. Tonight the ISS was going right over my house in Marlborough at 6:08 PM. I decided to try to make a still photograph of it with my NIkon camera. Passing over at a -3.5 magnitude it was an easy target to find in my telescope and camera viewfinder. I imaged … [Read more...]
