After a extremely busy few days of chasing hard news stories in Hartford I was sent out to chase a hard ice story. We usually see the ice in the Connecticut River during winter but, do not give it a second thought. What about the people who keep a clear channel from the sound to Hartford for merchant sea vessels? Well, come in the USCG Cutter Bollard. This 65' Ice breaker has … [Read more...]

January’s waning moon
I had to leave a little early for work today because I had to do a television show for our sister company WTIC Fox61. When I arrived at about 5:45am I was presently greeted with this 6% waning January Moon. It was 12 degrees outside but not cold enough to get this nice shot of the moon passing in back of several church steeples. If I didn't have to wake up early, I would have … [Read more...]
Inauguration Day! Our Day!
Congratulations President Obama! It has been quite a day watching all the historic events unfolding all day. From the crowds already pouring into the National Mall at 6:00am in 20 degree weather, to the wonderful parade late in the afternoon. In my career as a photojournalist over the past 30+ years I have been lucky to attend three Presidential inaugurations. All of them so … [Read more...]
It’s better with bino’s!
We are in the dead of winter right now. It takes you 20 minutes to dress up in all the warm clothing you need. After that you are so tired you don't even feel like going out. Ok, what about taking man's best friend to accompany you to your favorite observing spot. Heck no. One look at you and they think your the Michellan Tire Man, gets scared, and runs away. So, unless … [Read more...]

An average video package, or story you might say is about 1.5 minutes, to 3 minutes long. It will take about 500 megabytes to over a gigabyte of memory to store each one. In the past I have averaged about 80 video packages per year that I have shot. … [Read more...]
What does a baked potato and a USB port have in common?
Ah, come on, don't give up yet! Think.....Hmmm. It's winter. You like to do outdoor activities. Maybe some photography? How about astrophotography? How about just using your computer. How about trying to save some money? Ok. Enough clues. "What does a baked potato and a USB port have in common?" Ways to stay warm. Yup! No, I have not fallen off my telescope tripod and hit my … [Read more...]
Few observing nights in 2008?
2008 is gone, and so ends the wettest year on record since 1905. The much anticipated Connecticut Star Party washed out, public observing nights canceled, public outreach sessions postponed or eliminated. That's the way it was this past year here in Connecticut. According to the National Weather Service, central Connecticut usually gets about 46 inches of precipation. The new … [Read more...]
