Over the past several days I have been taking walks around the new Connecticut Science Center that is currently under construction. I have noticed when the sun is correctly positioned there is a great sense of symmetry that radiates out of the building. Over those days when I was out there, I managed to take a few photos to show you what I mean. The building is gorgeous, … [Read more...]

A combined effort
Because of the bad weather we having over the past several days for observing I have been spending my time learning my Images Plus 3.50 program. I thought I would try to combine the same image taken from two different telescopes, from two different locations. After digging through "a lot"of cd's I came up with about 35 usable images from my Meade 10", and 20 images from my new … [Read more...]
Leaf Peeping and Houses Peaking
Fall is my favorite time of the year. The colors are bright, and the air is clear and crisp. Each autumn I try to find a different location to shoot some foliage pictures. This year was no exception as I discovered East Rock Park in New Haven. Ever drive down I-91 and see the sheer cliffs off to the right with a monument on top just before you reach New Haven? That's East Rock … [Read more...]
Andromeda Rising
I spent most of last evening practicing with a new astronomy image acquiring program, and computer cables to download images directly from the DSLR camera into the computer, much like a CCD camera would do. After a few "first time out glitches" I got it to work. I then spent the next 6 hours tweaking my ability to focus, capture and download over 100 long exposure images. Most … [Read more...]
It’s a Harvest Moon isn’t it?
Well, it depends on who you are and what you are. While driving into work today I noticed this months full moon next to the State Capitol building. A picture I have always wanted to take. I started wondering, is it the Harvest Moon, or the Hunter's Moon, which I heard it was called on a local radio station. Here's the answer. In Colonial America it was called the Hunter's … [Read more...]
Madison Moonwalk
The Madison Land Conservation Trust, along with the Madison Beach and Recreation Department, hosted their 14th annual Madison Autumn Moonwalk again this year at the Madison Surf Club. As usual Durant McCurley played his bagpipes for the walkers as they hiked along the Garvan Trail for about an hour. After the walk several hundred people lined up at 6 telescopes, and one set of … [Read more...]
Butterfly Release
When pumpkins, halloween costumes, and cider donuts are the name of the game for farm stands and local nurseries around here, how does one get customers to come to "their" store? An innovative idea by the owner of Vinney's Home and Garden Showplace in East Hartford did the trick. Following directions, and times of the release that were published in our local newspaper, I … [Read more...]
Whites Memorial astronomy night

For those who are not familar with it, the Conservation Center is located in a 4000 acre White Memorial Foundation park. The Center has a museum, hiking trails, and campgrounds, as well as a Museum Nature store, and classroom facilites for large groups. … [Read more...]
My Astronomy Club
As many of you have figured out through my blogs I am a member of the Astronomical Society of New Haven. Over the past three years I have been documenting the activites of the club with my still and video camera to show the public what we are all about. Below is the video that I have put together. It's just over eight minutes long, so sit back, relax, and see that we actually … [Read more...]
Squeezing the last postcard out of Block Island
They say when life gives you lemons you make lemonade. Well the skies parted here and gave me a chance to squeeze out a few more pictures before the weather turns bad again. I checked out a couple of new roads and was rewarded with this image of a summer season past. I bet the young lemonade salesperson makes a bundle here with all the tourists. Perhaps he helps pay his parents … [Read more...]
