Back in 1985 the Old Lyme Observatory Foundation donated the observatory to the school. Along with using it for school functions the observatory was open to the town for public viewing sessions.
Over the years participation and viewership in the observatory decreased.
Now, on September 7, 2011 the Board of Education with a vote 8-1 voted to put the telescope into storage, and the actual observatory was “to be disposed of as planned with no remains of the building on district property.”
A new dome like the one that is going to be destroyed is worth around $15, 000 – $25,000.
