At 30,000 feet, James Bond’s playground revealed

April 19, 2009 by CtCameraEye Leave a Comment

When I fly always try to get a window seat, because you never know what your going to see. Over the years from my always small aerial armchair, I have photographed many cloud formations, cities, other planes, astronomical/meteorlogical events, and now, James Bond’s island playground.

Coming back from Puerto Rico about a week ago, we were flying at 30,000 feet over a beautiful chain of islands. I surmised them to be part of the Bahamas, but the Bahamas have hundreds of islands. Which area are we flying over? I then spotted this island with a runway on it that would help me identify it later.  The image is below.

After getting home and having adjusted back to a normal way of life, I finally had some time to figure out what island I was looking at. Hello, GOOGLE EARTH! Within about ten minutres of scanning the chain of Bahama Islands I spotted what I was looking for. Here’s the image I found, courtesy of Google Earth.

The name of this beautiful island with an airport is no other than Staniel Cay, one of the 365 islands in the Exuma chain of islands in the Bahamas. This small island is known for Thunderball Grotto, one of the most outstanding snorkeling attractions in all of the Bahamas. This hollowed out rock has been the location for the James Bond movies, Thunderball , and Never Say Never Again, and also the movie Splash.  Below is a map of actually where the Grotto is located, just north of the Staniel Cay Yacht Club.

The island looked that great from 30,000 feet, I can’t imagine how beautiful it is down on the ground. Have one for me James, stirred not shaken…….
