After checking the weather maps it was a last minute decision to make a quick 3 hour trip up to Glens Falls, N.Y. to see the Adirondack Balloonfest.
Making it there within an hour of the launch at 5:00pm I was with about 5,000 other people. Once I got close enought to the launch field I saw a lot of kites of all different sizes flying in the air. Seeing that, I knew it was not good news. When there is enough wind for kites to fly, balloons might not.
As the 5pm launch time approached, the wind actually increased, as hundreds of cars still were entering the balloon launch site at Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport.
Knowing the flights would be canceled, I headed out before the crowd finally figured it all out.
Next stop. The balloon “Moonglow” at Battlefield Park, Lake George Village just north of Glens Falls.
Leaving early was the best decision of the weekend. As I arrived just about 30 minutes before thousands of people started to show up.
The three balloons were already filling up with hot air, and putting on a show! Photo time!
Split second timing makes a perfect image of all three balloons igniting at once!
But this was a ” Hot Air Balloon Moonglow” right?
What do I see? A waxing cresent moon in between the two balloons on the right. Time to change to some long lenses!
Now we are talking about a Moon Glow!
Even the balloon crew was having fun igniting throughout the night.
The rest of the weekend for the Balloonfest looks like it was going to be a wash out because of a cold front moving though. To bad, a lot of work from hundreds of people to put this great experience together. Hopefully next year will be better.
